Netties

The Network Awards or "Netties" were the NAWGJ version of the Oscars. This award was created at the 1995 National Meeting. The awards were presented at the annual State Judging Director's Workshops. There were six categories for outstanding state newsletters:
Best Interview, Best Use of Charts or Graphs, Best Humorous Article, Best Layout and Design, Best Informational or Educational Article, Media Masters Award for Best Video.

Governing Board voted to change the award categories for 2000. The new categories were:
Best Website; Best Educational Article; Best Informational Article; Best Layout and Design of a Newsletter; Best Educational Video; Best Humorous Video; Best Feature Article.

The last year these were awarded was in 2009.

1996 - first annual Nettie winners. These were presented at the SJD workshop in Boston on June 27th. The regional judging directors brought state newsletters from their region and the newsletters were divided into the six divisions and the national board voted for the best newsletter in each group.

A list of nominees in each category were read and the winners received a Nettie and a certificate. The winners were: Best Interview - Toni Cupal, SJD Nor-Cal, Molly Watkins, author; Best Use of Charts and Graphs - Jan Adkins, SJD, WI; Best Informational and Educational; Hilary Carlson, SJD IL; Best Humorous Article - Toni Cupal, SJD Nor-Cal, Patty Shipman, author; Best Layout and Design - Celeste Hamil, SJD So-Cal, Rebecca Callaway, editor; and Media Master's Award - Best Video, Barb Tebbin, MN


1997 - second annual Nettie awards presented in Miami.
The ceremony took place at the SJD Workshop at the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami Beach, FL on June 26.
Best Interview - Nor-Cal, Toni Cupal, SJD, Interview with Joanne Pasquale by Molly Watkins
Best Use of Charts or Graphs - OH, Carol Arnaut, SJD Charts by Lois Mower
Best Humorous Article - WY, Michelle Wistisen, SJD, Potty Talk by Rose Fry. Best Newsletter Layout and Design - IL, Hilary Carlson, SJD. Best Informational or Educational Article - IL and IA, Hilary Carlson, SJD IL, Mary Ann West, SJD IA.

Two honorary Netties were presented to Winnie Witten of MI and Robin Ruegg of MN for their many hours of hard work in the development of their computer programs that many judges across the country are using to prepare for certification.
